essay example learning styles

The first encounter one will have with finding there learning styles are in the early years, children are taught with all seven learning styles and later figure which one works without being asked to do so. When children are young often teachers help them learn through song such as the Abs’s this is Musical Intelligence or even through allowing the students to touch things that start with that letter and connect this is kinesthesia. No matter how someone learns does not determine their intelligence both Musical and kinesthesia learners have a unique way of grasping information.

There are many reasons why people learn using Kinesthesia and Musical styles, being able to understand what kinesthesia learning is and what Musical learning is will be able to better help those struggling with finding their unique way of learning. According to Diane Lamellar- Bison in her article “Learning styles- What are they? How can they help? ” kinesthesia intelligence is using the whole body approach to learning, a person who learns in a kinesthesia learning style uses combinations of multiple learning styles.

The use of multiple learning styles insist of using verbal, auditory, visual and tactical in which a kinesthesia learning incorporates into their style. Standing, walking and just movement in general is the best way that a kinesthesia learner learns best, according to Lamellar- Bison “He performs better when working in short spurts rather than concentrated blocks of time. Because of his pent-up energy, he often gets restless and fidgety” (7). A kinesthesia learner can’t sit for long periods of time due to the constant need to move rather than sit and become idle.

Disorientation is commonly seen with a kinesthesia learner however according to Lamellar – Bison this is not disorientation but “organized confusion” this is a method that works best for the learner (7). A kinesthesia learner incorporates learning such as math, science, etc with some form of movement or acting in an attempt to obtain the information. Lamellar – Bison explains that a kinesthesia learner represents what he has learned through experiments this is what is used to retain the information.

The different types of kinesthesia learners have other ways of retaining the information in which they learned. A tactical kinesthesia learner uses touch in order to retain information unlike the other types of learners who visualizes what they*re trying to learn and retain. Similar to other kinesthesia learners a tactical kinesthesia learner does not like to sit still, they need constant movement in order to obtain, but where there different is a tactical learner does not like to read or do exercises they need to be able to touch such as using a calculator or writing on a chalk board.

Though all types of kinesthesia learners learn through experiment and through movement they all have different ways of obtaining the information they learned. The movement of a kinesthesia learner shouldn’t be punished but encouraged because it is the way in which they learn best. According to Jennifer L. Nolan in her article “Musical Intelligence in the Classroom” Musical intelligence is the use of sound to convey their emotions. Often times someone who is musically intelligent discovers this at a young age. At the age a child learns to sing this is developing them as a musically intelligent learner.

This child may be able to read music or even critique a performance this is showing their musical intelligence to Obtain information. In today’s classroom musical intelligence is often not demonstrated, this for many reason such as; teachers may not feel that it is important to teach through music or it is not the traditional teaching style however, everyone does not learn the same this being said encouraging a students musical intelligence is also important just a encouraging the other learning styles into the classroom.

Nolan believes that Music can act as a way of capturing feelings, of knowing and understanding feelings, which is an important part of educating children” taking away a child need for music can affect them in the lassoer (1 Nolan also believes that musical intelligence is the common medium between the other six learning styles. The value of musical intelligence is important because of its connecting the other styles for example musical intelligence can help with developing mathematical intelligence, this is possible because such as math music also contain ratios and mathematical patterns.

Musical intelligence also compares to an auditory learner, they are able to hear/ listen and are able to obtain the information. Musical learners are able to learn through song listening to what their being taught helps them attain the information. When they are sung to it gives them a rhythm of pitch they can remember that they can associate with the subject in which they are being taught. Studies have shown that a person who is musically intelligent has a higher brain waive and better test scores than those who are not.

This is because listening to music and studying music requires the other learning style which helps them adapt to them all and learn using them all. They are better equipped to understand in other way than musically. Kinesthesia and Musical Intelligence are similar in ways that both are two intelligences not focused on in school but both are effective ways of learning. Someone who is musically intelligent may also use kinesthesia methods of learning such as; someone who goes to the gym to work out that person may listen to music while working out to keep their focus.

This method is utilizing both movement and music to keep focus on one thing which is working out. Using both these intelligences help with staying adaptable to the other five intelligences. With Kinesthesia there are verbal, visual and auditory kinesthesia learners all officio are their own intelligence, and in musical you have the opacity to connect that to any of the learning styles whether it be mathematical or even auditory both help connect to the other intelligences. Having the ability to utilize these styles do not make one smarter than another but they both help adaptation of other learning styles.

Musical and kinesthesia have many similarities as well as differences. Both styles focus on different aspects of learning while kinesthesia focuses on the movement and experimental learning musical focuses on songs, rhythms, etc as a method of learning. The way in which one learns the information is very efferent where a musical learner may be able to sit and compose a musical piece a kinesthesia learning may not be able to. Though they both develop the ability to adapt to other styles they have other ways of bringing out those other styles.

Musical learners are able to adapt because through music it incorporates other styles while learning where as kinesthesia is developed by an individual. A child can develop their musical side starting at an early age where kinesthesia is a learning style that takes time to develop and realize that they are a kinesthesia learner. Finding the learning style comes easy in one and is more of a constant struggle in the other this is just because sometimes in kinesthesia a Child’s constant movement can arise from something other than the way they learn.

I agree with both Nolan on her article “Multiple Intelligence in the Classroom” and Lamellar -?Bison on her article “Learning styles- What are they? How can they help? ” I believe that both musical and kinesthesia are two learning ways that are underused in the classroom. Both are utilized in an early stage of education then somewhere along the way this stops. I feel that if teachers used more than the standard way of teaching it would help not just me but many students like me.

I myself was always a misunderstood student because I lack focus when sitting in the classroom. I now know it’s not because I’m not smart enough to focus but because the learning style I have adapted to allows me to be more hands on and moving versus sitting in a classroom. If more teachers adapted to teaching other styles versus the standard I feel it will bridge the gap between a student who is labeled as a bad egg’ because they are not bad just misunderstood.

In conclusion musical and kinesthesia intelligence are two very important yet undervalued intelligences. Helping a child find the learning style that best fits them is important and not labeling that child as less than one who learns differently. Improving the way student learn may also improve communication between students and teacher and improve how one reacts to someone who learning style differs. Understanding all learning styles will help with understanding all types of students and learners.
