(Booth) Since everyone has a different personality, they each play various functions in friendship. People usually have friends that are closer than the other friends; because of this, friend types can be be put into three different categories: acquaintances, moderate friends, and best friends. Acquaintances are friends, but not close friends like the other two groups.

They are the people one might see in the hall and smile at, classmates that sit next each other in class, and may talk about homework, sports team-mates that only talk to each other during practice or games, a league, or even someone who shares the same bus stop. Usually the only thing two acquaintances know about each other is their name. Acquaintances are pleasant people to talk to at a specific time, but there is never an effort made to get to know them more. In class, one particular girl is my acquaintance.

We talk in school and many people would think that we are close friends; if there is a partner project for class we are partners, but outside of class and school we don’t see each other or talk. The second type of friends, moderate friends, are good friends that you can talk to, but not usually about personal problems. This group can also be referred to as school friends, because it is people you meet at school, or in controlled settings. Moderate friends might get confused with acquaintances but they re different in many ways. For example, moderate friends talk to each other about classes, sports, activities, jokes and sometimes family or friends. These are the people you generally share the same interests with and have mutual friends. Sometimes moderate friends are friends with you because they know the people you interact with.

You make a special effort to talk to them in school, and sometimes outside of school in an activity. This type of friend is great, but they are often the people you hang out with when you’re in a group of people, instead of one on one. (Image 2) “Usually this type is also known as clique, because it is a group of friends. ” (Pang). You usually don’t find yourself having lunch, or going to a movie with just them because they aren’t that close to you, and it’s often a chore to talk to them, not because you guys have nothing to talk about, but it just takes effort to keep the conversation going.

In elementary years, moderate friends, or school friends are usually all a child has, because they haven’t had the time to make closer, or best friends yet. Having this type of friend is important because it is mainly who you are with for activities, and a majority of your adolescent years. When it comes to younger children moderate friends greatly influence them for the future. “University of Oregon psychologists say the new friendships may directly influence a middle scholars potential academic success or future challenges in high school and beyond. (Nearer). Image 2 (Hereon) Contrary to the second type of friends, the third type, best friends, are the friends you talk about everything with. You don’t necessarily spend the most time with them, but you often spend the most quality time with best friends, and have the most memories with them. Friends are very important because they help you emotionally, mentally and sometimes physically. “Real friends can be a source of self-esteem, affection, and good times. In times of despair, for example, true friends will offer hope. ” (Taylor) Similar to the three types of friends, there are also types of best friends. There are friends who have known each other for a long time, and possibly their whole lives, so they become best friends.

Some people become best friends because they have the same trials and they help one another by offering each other advice, which allows them to grow closer. Some friends have multiple things in common, so they are involved in a lot of the same things, such as sports, clubs, activities; and over time they become best friends. Best friends are people who have been close to each other for a while, they are the friends who talk deeply, and have very similar interests. People often keep in contact tit best friends more than any other type of friend, and are true friends for a long time.
